What's in the Circle?

Can you tell what is in the circle this month? If you said "ancient hieroglyphics", you are not correct. But it was a good try!

This unbelievably well preserved piece is a great example of cuneiform writing. Cuneiform was, of course, the medium in which many of the ancient Bible stories may first have been recorded.

Since this particular specimen has just recently surfaced, scientists and cryptologists have not

really had an opportunity to study it but it appears to have been part of an early agricultural writing. Initial observations indicate that it can be roughly translated as, "Certain corn kernels, exposed to heat, explode." This has touched off a bidding war between Orville Redenbacher and Redi-Pop for exclusive rights to use the image in packaging and advertising.

Okay, I lied. I admit it. The parts about early Bible stories and cuneiform writing were true. But actually this "sample' was created in Bible Study after church last Sunday by either Mimi Peters or Stephanie Creel. I did the translation "on my own" this week.

Surely there is a point here. Ah, Bible Study after church on Sundays! In general the format is "A Seeker's Guide to..." with a different topic each week. Until Christmas, those topics will be related to the Old Testament. Last week, the topic was "Formation of the Old Testament". Next week features the story (stories) of Creation. On October 1, there will be a presentation on the Congo trip by Donna Bowers and me.

Therefore, if you will miss any weeks, or cannot begin until later in the fall, you will be right on schedule every time you come, with a new topic every week. Since topics will be posted in the bulletin each month, you may just decide to attend for certain topics only. And please tell us if you have some suggestions.

The presenters, Reverend Dianne and I, will use a variety of learning and discussion strategies. This will include some brief VCR, CD, and computer presentations.

We hope you will join us as we try to make this class enjoyable, comfortable, and meaningful.

Faithfully yours,

Sally
