What's in the Circle?

Did you like being on a team when you were a "kid"? I always did.

I'm trying to remember the first real team I was ever on. "Define 'team'", I tell myself. Well, when I was a kid, a team was a group that played whatever I like to play and for which there was a hope that I would get a uniform.

A uniform. That could be anything from one of my big brother's t-shirts to a pair of dad's socks, maybe two pairs. (Pin-striped stirrup socks would have been great but I don't think we had any at our house.)

Ladies, do you remember those red "pinnies" we used to tie on as team markers? Well, it was something anyway. The boys just played "shirts and skins" and, if you were the only girl playing, you, of course, had to be on the "shirts". Face it, folks, sometimes I was the only girl on the team and I always felt bad for the boys who got picked much later than I did. I went quite early in the "draft", for baseball and basketball that is.

As we all have, I've learned a lot over the years about being on a team. For me, there is a comfort level involved that provides not only common purpose but also comradeship and a bit of security as well. I still like being on a team. That's why I like the way things are happening with the Chimes.

You no doubt noticed the double sided front page of this issue (click here to see both pages; it's a big .pdf file, but it's worth the time it takes to load it). That is a gift to you from Don Smith and me. Don has taken so many great photos and has wanted to do a color page for some time. We decided to do it right after Easter. Don created not only the photos but the layouts as well. This process included a few phone calls: "Did you get the e-mail? I just sent it with page one."

"Okay, here it comes now! Ohhhh...look-ing gooood!" Team chatter, you know?

Then of course, there's Carol Jones and Reverend and Reverend, Dirk Grove and the website, Lois Gillespie with her total organizational skills, Diantha "Red Pencil" Pack, Chef Geoff, Bev Cook, Jane Bennett, Steve Blackwell, Bob and Tilly Tyson, Buz and Marion Barr. Can't forget Bob and Betty Carnahan, Suzi Berry, and Betty Barnes. And the committee chairs of course who frequently submit articles: Faith Duncan, Betsy Hendricks, Stephanie Creel, John Rotach, Lois Gillespie (again), Silvia and Bill Ritchie, Pat and John Mossel. And God - especially God, most certainly God..And of course, the Unnamed Contributor in case I left anyone out.

I think we should get shirts.

Finding one to fit God is going to be the tough part. Oh well, I just want to be picked for His team! We can just wear His shirt.

Peace,

Sally
