August 2006

Dear Friends,

Like the Grail in King Arthur's day which would only fleetingly appear before vanishing into thin air, The DaVinci Code has very quickly fallen off the radar of mainstream media now that the movie has proved to be somewhat of a bust. The whole thing has been rather anti-climactic. For several months you could not open a paper or a magazine, watch a cable news show or Entertainment Tonight without hearing about all the controversy surrounding Dan Brown's novel and its adaptation to the screen. But the culture has moved on. From the World Cup to the Piston Cup, other trophies have taken our attention.

However, I have been a student of Grail literature for a long time. Thankfully, I made it to Roslyn Chapel before The DaVinci Code was published because I understand now the crowds can be distracting. But my interest in the Grail story has always been in the context of Arthurian legend and as metaphor for the spiritual quest.

On Wednesday, July 19th, there will be a Supper & Scripture offering which will take as its subject the Quest for the Holy Grail in its dominant story line from Arthurian romance. With the help of a few slides we will review the story. The complex of tales and figures which make up the Grail legend are illuminating of many Biblical themes. This is myth which compliments Christian teaching, not corrupts it.

This should be a rewarding evening of good fellowship and discussion about what it means to take up the spiritual quest in light of the cup of Christ.

Blessings in these days of summer,

Frank
